Pokhara regional international airport has started its first phase of operations from 01 January 2023. Only the domestic flights are being scheduled at the moment. It is located in Pokhara, the tourism capital of Nepal in Gandaki, province. The airport is Nepal’s third international airport and was inaugurated by Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Prachanda, the newly elected Prime Minister of Nepal.
Construction of Pokhara International Airport
This international airport will be able to handle 1 million passengers per year. With the aim of opening the airport in 2020 the then, prime minister of Nepal KP Sharma Oli laid the foundation stone in April 2016. However, due to the covid-19 pandemic in Nepal, the construction deadline was extended until 2022. In October 2021, government of Nepal has planned to operate the new regional airport in 2 phases. As per the plan, the first phase i.e domestic flights began in January 2022 while the international flight will begin in April 2022 in the next phase.
Facilities
The airport has a runway of 2500 m with a parallel taxiway that can accommodate medium-range jet planes like Airbus A320 and Boeing 737/ 757s. The parking bays can handle up to 11 aircraft including three International aircraft and 8 domestic aircraft. Two terminals, one domestic and one international can handle 1 million passengers annually.
Connectivity
When this airport will come into full operation, Pokhara, one of the major tourist hot spots of Nepal will directly be connected to cities of China, India, Singapore Malaysia, and the Gulf countries.
